In order to guarantee the quality and safety of agricultural products in Tianjin, the city has been intensifying its efforts to monitor and regulate the use of highly toxic pesticides. Recently, the Tianjin Municipal Pesticides Supervision and Administration Department announced that eight pesticide manufacturers producing five types of banned, highly toxic pesticides have been ordered to shut down. A total of over 3,300 kilograms of prohibited toxic pesticides have been confiscated within the city. As part of this initiative, the production equipment at these factories has been dismantled to prevent any further illegal manufacturing.
To implement the national regulations issued by four ministries and commissions—specifically notices No. 322 and No. 632—the Tianjin Drug Testing Institute has taken the lead in issuing a notice through the Bureau of Agriculture. All districts and counties are now required to prioritize the proper disposal of five highly toxic organophosphorus pesticides, including methamidophos. The Tianjin Pesticide Supervision and Administration Department has developed a detailed action plan, ensuring that no factory, store, bottle, or village is overlooked during the process. Every single unit of these harmful substances must be collected.
Rather than forcefully seizing the pesticides from farmers, the authorities have adopted a more cooperative approach. Farmers can either replace the banned pesticides with safer alternatives or redeem them at the same value. This strategy encourages voluntary compliance and reduces resistance. The goal is not only to eliminate the use of non-compliant pesticides but also to promote responsible farming practices. By offering incentives and support, the city aims to ensure long-term safety for both consumers and agricultural producers.
