In August, the heavy truck market continued its monthly decline in sales, yet still maintained a strong year-on-year growth. According to the latest data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, total production reached 36,999 units, while sales amounted to 36,267 vehicles—up 87.57% and 75.34% respectively compared to the same period last year. However, compared to July, production rose by 5.05%, while sales dropped by 8.9%.
This trend shows a clear slowdown in demand, especially since May. Sales have been falling steadily, with a drop of over 3,000 units each month from May to July (50,053; 46,423; 39,460). The gap between months has widened significantly, with nearly 7,000 fewer units sold in July compared to May. Year-on-year growth also slowed sharply in August, down nearly 18 percentage points from July’s 93.26% increase.
Looking at different weight segments, 19-ton trucks (total weight ≤ 26 tons) remained the most in demand, with 3,537 units sold in August—a 93.49% year-on-year increase, but a 8.7% drop from the previous month. In contrast, the segment for trucks weighing 26–32 tons saw even stronger growth, with 2,880 units sold—an impressive 188% increase year-on-year and a 19.01% rise from July.
Trucks in the 14–19 ton range saw only modest growth at 6.28%, while sales fell by 14.05% from the previous month. Similarly, trucks over 32 tons had low volumes, with just 115 units sold—though that represented a massive 447.62% year-on-year increase.
Semi-trailer tractors remained a key segment, with 25-ton models (≤40 tons total weight) leading the way. They sold 10,303 units in August, up 86.48% year-on-year but down 5.26% from July. These accounted for 76.19% of all semi-trailer tractor sales. Non-integrated heavy trucks also saw strong performance, with 15,288 units sold—up 54.41% year-on-year.
In terms of company performance, China National Heavy Duty Truck (Sinotruk) led the industry with 8,488 units sold in August, bringing its cumulative sales to 70,169—up 71.15% year-on-year. FAW followed closely with 68,494 units, a 60.43% increase. Dongfeng, Shaanxi Auto, Foton, and SAIC Iveco Hongyan rounded out the top six. Notably, Shaanxi Auto and Foton continued to show rapid growth, with increases of 85.55% and 110.88%, respectively.
Other companies like Hualing, Jianghuai, and Hubei Sanhuan also performed well, with growth rates exceeding 100%. JAC stood out as the only company in the top ten to see month-on-month growth, selling 1,446 units in August—an increase of 68.28% from July.
