In August, the heavy truck market continued to experience a month-on-month decline in sales, although it still maintained strong year-on-year growth. According to the latest data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the industry saw 36,999 units produced and 36,267 units sold, representing an 87.57% and 75.34% increase compared to the same period last year. However, compared to July, production rose by 5.05%, while sales dropped by 8.9%.
Looking at the monthly trend, heavy truck sales have been on a downward trajectory since May, with a consistent drop of over 3,000 units each month. Sales figures for May, June, and July were 50,053, 46,423, and 39,460 respectively, showing a sharp decline of nearly 7,000 units between June and July. Year-on-year growth also slowed significantly in August, dropping by almost 18 percentage points from July’s 93.26% growth. This indicates a clear weakening in demand, especially in the second half of the year.
Within the heavy truck segment, trucks with a total weight of ≤26 tons (19 tons) remained the most popular, with 3,537 units sold in August—up 93.49% year-on-year but down 8.70% from the previous month. Meanwhile, trucks with a total weight of ≤32 tons showed even stronger growth, selling 2,880 units, a 188% increase year-on-year and 19.01% higher than the previous month. On the other hand, trucks in the 14–19 ton and >32 ton categories had much lower sales. The 14–19 ton category saw only 924 units sold, up just 6.28% year-on-year but down 14.05% from July, indicating weak demand. Trucks with a total weight over 32 tons sold 115 units, a massive 447.62% increase year-on-year, though the volume remains small.
In the semi-trailer tractor segment, vehicles with a total weight of ≤40 tons (25 tons) dominated the market, selling 10,303 units in August—an 86.48% year-on-year increase and a 5.26% drop from July. These accounted for 76.19% of all semi-trailer tractor sales. Non-integrated heavy truck tractors also performed well, with 15,288 units sold, a 54.41% year-on-year rise and a 13.17% decrease from the previous month.
On the company level, China National Heavy Duty Truck (STC) topped the charts with 8,488 units sold in August, bringing its cumulative sales to 70,169—a 71.15% year-on-year increase. FAW followed closely with 68,494 units, up 60.43%. Dongfeng, Shaanxi Auto, Futian, and SAIC Iveco Hongyan rounded out the top six. Shaanxi Auto and Foton stood out with double-digit growth rates of 85.55% and 110.88%, respectively. Hualing, Jianghuai, and Hubei Sanhuan also saw impressive growth, with year-on-year increases of 117.32%, 319.01%, and 111.98%. JAC was the only top-ten company to see a month-on-month increase, with 1,446 units sold in August—a 68.28% rise from July.
