Development of Degradable Plastics Relies on Standardization of Industrialization

The 2007 annual meeting of the China Plastics Association's Degradable Plastics Special Committee is set to take place in Beijing soon. The event will focus on the progress and future direction of degradable plastics in China, with a strong emphasis on industrialization and standardization. Experts attending the meeting are expected to agree that these two factors are essential for the sustainable development of the sector. Liao Zhengzheng, president of the China Plastics Processing Industry Association, emphasized that the key to advancing degradable plastics lies in effectively integrating domestic and international research and production efforts. He highlighted that China is currently in the process of establishing and improving a series of national standards for degradable plastics. Through collaboration among industry experts, companies, and market demonstrations, the sector has gradually found a suitable path toward industrialization. This ongoing development not only supports the creation of standards but also fosters mutual growth between industrialization and regulation. Liao expressed hope that the industry would continue to build platforms for cooperation between production, education, and research. He called for increased investment in basic resin development, stronger research into material modifications, and enhanced independent innovation capabilities in China’s degradable plastics sector. At the same time, he reminded participants to consider China’s specific conditions when adopting foreign technologies, ensuring that the development of degradable plastics remains adaptable and inclusive rather than overly dependent on a single technological approach. With growing awareness of environmental protection, the development of degradable plastics in China has accelerated in recent years. In 2006, the output of biodegradable plastics was just 30,000 tons. By 2010, the capacity is expected to reach 100,000 tons, with demand surpassing 200,000 tons. Currently, green and degradable plastics are already being widely used in Olympic venues. As the plastics industry continues to evolve, the future of degradable plastics in packaging materials looks increasingly promising, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic products.
