For over three decades, the first large-scale fertilizer plant introduced to China, the second ammonia and urea production facility of Sichuan Chemical Group, has been operating successfully. This plant, with a capacity of 300,000 tons/year of synthetic ammonia and 480,000 tons/year of urea, has been in operation for 30 years since its commissioning. As of May 2006, it had cumulatively produced 8.95 million tons of synthetic ammonia and 13.79 million tons of urea, making a significant contribution to China's agricultural development.
The facility was originally imported from Japan in the early 1970s. It was designed as a large-scale, single-unit plant with a high level of automation, and the total investment reached 262 million yuan. Construction began on May 7, 1974, and the plant was completed and started producing synthetic ammonia on June 22, 1976. Just ten days later, on July 2, it successfully produced qualified urea, marking a major milestone in China’s chemical industry.
Over the past 30 years, this plant has not only operated smoothly but also continuously evolved through innovation and technological advancement. Starting from the initial technology transfer, Sichuan Chemical Group carried out more than 20 major technical upgrades and over 100 technological innovations. In 1985, it became the first in the country to apply computer technology for optimizing the control of large-scale fertilizer production. This breakthrough earned the "National Science and Technology Progress Award." In 1991, the synthesis tower was upgraded, reducing the pressure from 24MPa to 20MPa, which improved production efficiency and extended equipment lifespan. In 1998, a joint Sino-Japanese project implemented waste heat recovery and furnace reconstruction, achieving notable energy savings and environmental benefits. By 2001, a major technical upgrade of the urea system was completed, expanding product variety and enhancing market competitiveness.
Today, the plant operates efficiently and complies fully with national environmental standards. Its performance continues to improve, reflecting both technological progress and sustainable development. This long-standing facility remains a symbol of China's industrial growth and technological self-reliance.
