Still and Box Alarm fire with a Mayday alert in Chicago, 2-12-22

I just came across some alarming news on chicagolandfirephotos.smugmug.com about a recent fire incident. According to the report, Chicago Fire Department responded to a fire call at 112th Place and Princeton. Fire Engine 93 and Engine 62 (spare unit) along with Ladder Truck 27 (spare) were dispatched to the scene. Unfortunately, during their initial entry into the building, the fire suddenly flashed over, causing significant danger to the firefighters inside. Six of them sustained injuries, prompting a mayday call to be issued, and an emergency medical response plan was activated immediately. Multiple firefighters were rushed to Christ Hospital, where they received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. Some of the reported injuries include minor burns and a dislocated shoulder. It’s heartening to see the swift response by the emergency services, but this incident is a stark reminder of the risks these brave men and women face every day. The list of units that arrived on the scene is extensive, including multiple engines like 93, 62 (spare), 75 (spare), and 115, as well as ladder trucks such as 27 (spare), 62 (spare), 42, and 37 (spare). There was also an unidentified ladder truck listed as being on standby. The command structure included several battalion chiefs—Battalion Chiefs 20, 21, 22, 23, and 24—as well as Deputy District Chiefs and various other support staff. Emergency medical services were also heavily involved, with ambulances from units 17, 71, 72, 79, 51, and 37, along with chief medics from units 4-5-6 and 4-4-12. Attached to the post are several images from the scene, showing the intensity of the fire and the efforts made by firefighters to control it. I’ve included one image here for reference, which clearly depicts the scale of the incident. There are additional photos available in the gallery, showcasing different angles and stages of the firefighting operation. This situation highlights the critical importance of preparedness and teamwork in emergency scenarios. My thoughts are with the injured firefighters and their families during this difficult time. Hopefully, lessons learned from this incident will help improve safety measures and protocols for future operations.
