A dramatic scene on a Columbus County (NC) highway has been grabbing the attention of drivers across the region. A destroyed fire department truck and a bold sign are now serving as a powerful reminder to always pay attention when emergency vehicles are on the road. The truck, once part of the Acme-Delco-Riegelwood Fire-Rescue team, was involved in a tragic accident and is now used as a warning symbol.
The sign, written in all caps, reads: “THE RESULTS OF NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO EMERGENCY LIGHTS & VEHICLES ON A TRAFFIC SCENE.†It’s a stark message meant to encourage drivers to stay alert and give emergency responders the space they need to do their job safely.
“We want people to put down their phones, look up, and give us their full attention,†said Steve Camlin, chief of Acme-Delco-Riegelwood Fire-Rescue. “That way, we can keep everyone safe on the road.â€
The incident occurred on December 10, 2018, when a tractor-trailer collided with the fire department vehicle. The crash then caused the truck to hit a family’s car that was receiving assistance at the scene. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, but the event left a lasting impact on the community and the fire department.
The wreckage and the sign will remain on the roadside for the next one to two weeks, until the salvage company removes them. For now, it's a sobering reminder of what can happen when drivers aren’t paying attention — and a call to action for everyone on the road to be more mindful and respectful of emergency personnel.
