According to a recent analysis report from the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association, the country's petroleum and chemical industry showed mixed performance in the first two months of this year. While overall economic growth remained stable, the production growth rate slowed down, reflecting a trend of "value decline." This slowdown is largely attributed to the continued impact of national macro-control policies, which have helped curb excessive growth momentum within the sector.
In the early part of the year, crude oil production growth decelerated significantly, while natural gas output saw a more rapid increase. Meanwhile, refined oil products—such as gasoline, kerosene, and diesel—continued to grow steadily. However, fertilizer production faced a notable slowdown due to adverse weather conditions and reduced demand, whereas pesticide production maintained a relatively high growth rate, albeit with some moderation.
Factors such as product structure adjustments, rising input costs, and sluggish domestic and international demand led to a sharp decline in the growth rates of major bulk chemical products. For instance, ethylene production dropped by 23.3% year-on-year, pure benzene production fell by 46%, methanol output declined by 29%, and synthetic resin production decreased by 26.6 percentage points. Additionally, synthetic fiber output fell by around 10% compared to the same period last year.
The production of key "high pollution, high energy consumption, and capital-intensive" products also slowed down. Sulfuric acid output grew by about 8 percentage points less than the previous year, caustic soda output dropped by 8.4 percentage points, calcium carbide production fell sharply by 27.1 percentage points, and synthetic ammonia output decreased by 1.3% year-on-year to 8.189 million tons.
In February, the overall demand for petroleum and chemical products remained strong, with smooth production and sales coordination. Prices of major basic inorganic chemical raw materials stayed firm, while organic chemical product prices generally declined. Fertilizer prices, however, saw an accelerated rise. Out of the 174 tracked chemical products, 118 (or 67.82%) experienced year-on-year price increases, 3 (1.72%) remained stable, and 53 (30.46%) saw price declines.
Currently, the chemical industry is facing growing pressure and challenges. On one hand, the rising costs of energy and raw materials are putting upward pressure on product prices. On the other hand, downstream enterprises have limited capacity to absorb these costs, leading to a difficult situation where cost pressures are intensifying and the ability to pass them on is limited.
Industry experts suggest that the current challenges are a natural outcome of national macro-control policies and industrial restructuring. Companies need to recognize this trend and focus on internal improvements through structural adjustments, technological innovation, and management upgrades. By reducing material and energy consumption and lowering production costs, enterprises can enhance their competitiveness in an increasingly challenging market.
