Large-scale plastic granulators begin to implement localization

Dalian Rubber & Plastics Machinery Co., Ltd. has recently revealed that its 200,000-ton large-scale plastic granulator is now in the production phase. This marks a significant milestone as China's first large-scale plastic granulator moves into full implementation. The project was officially recognized as a key national debt initiative by the National Development and Reform Commission, highlighting its strategic importance. According to the company’s plan, the first domestically produced 200,000-ton unit is expected to be completed by early 2009 and will then be deployed at Yanshan Petrochemical Company. A plastic granulator plays a crucial role in the post-processing stage of polyethylene and polypropylene production systems. It combines mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation technologies, featuring high automation levels. As a critical component in large ethylene projects, it is essential for efficient polymer processing. Currently, only a handful of global companies, such as Germany’s W.P., possess the complete expertise in design, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning of such equipment. Domestically, Chinese manufacturers have collaborated with foreign firms to produce several 70,000-ton units, but these efforts have not yet achieved full success. Large-scale granulators require a capacity of over 50 tons per hour, translating to an annual output of 300,000 to 400,000 tons. Their design and manufacturing are complex, and they come with a high price tag—each unit can cost between $5 million and $7 million. Despite this, demand has surged in recent years, leading to a persistent supply shortage in the global market. Experts emphasize that future developments in large-scale plastic granulators will focus on larger scale, higher precision, and advanced control systems. Users are also placing greater emphasis on mechanical stability, energy efficiency, and reduced consumption. With global polyolefin production lines now reaching up to 500,000 tons annually, granulation units must not only be large but also highly reliable and precise. Some specialized plastics require accurate extrusion, which necessitates the development of melt gear pumps. Additionally, modern granulators need intelligent systems that enhance performance, improve raw material utilization, reduce energy use, and minimize environmental impact. In developed countries, most plastic granulators already feature online process parameter monitoring and closed-loop computer control, ensuring stable operation and improved product quality. In contrast, China's granulator technology remains relatively underdeveloped, with most domestic efforts focused on small- and medium-sized equipment. Large and medium-sized polyolefin extrusion granulators are still largely imported. Notably, Dalian Rubber & Plastics Machinery Co., Ltd. has made significant progress in recent years. The company has successfully designed 70,000 to 100,000-ton granulation units and has mastered the manufacturing processes and special technologies for major components through independent research and the adoption of new technologies. This achievement represents a major step forward in China’s push for self-reliance in advanced industrial machinery.
