This summer, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is hosting a groundbreaking demonstration of EV charging robots right in its parking lots. These mobile, autonomous robots aim to revolutionize electric vehicle charging by bringing the power directly to your parked car, making the process more convenient than ever before.
The star of the show is a robot named ZiGGY, created by EV Safe Charge, a Los Angeles-based company specializing in flexible EV charging solutions. ZiGGY can be summoned to charge your electric vehicle while you’re away, autonomously returning to its charging dock once the job is done. This innovation is set to address one of the most frustrating challenges for EV drivers—ICE-ing, where internal combustion engine vehicles occupy charging spots meant for electric vehicles.
The demonstration program, scheduled to run from May through August, is part of DFW Airport's initiative to showcase cutting-edge EV technology. ZiGGY has already made waves with its ability to locate open parking spaces, park itself, and even notify drivers of its availability. The process is seamless: after the car arrives, ZiGGY moves aside, connects to the vehicle, and begins charging. When finished, it returns to its charging station to prepare for the next request.
According to Caradoc Ehrenhalt, founder and CEO of EV Safe Charge, ZiGGY was selected because of its unique capability to provide charging access across entire parking lots, not just designated spots. This flexibility is key to overcoming current infrastructure limitations and improving overall accessibility for EV drivers.
As I watched the accompanying video, I couldn’t help but think about how transformative this technology could be. In the clip, ZiGGY is summoned by a driver who isn’t even near the airport. It finds an available spot, parks itself, and waits for the driver to arrive. Once the car is present, ZiGGY moves out of the way, connects to the vehicle, and starts charging. The autonomy and efficiency on display are impressive, and it’s easy to imagine this becoming standard practice at airports and beyond.
This pilot project is more than just a novelty; it represents a step forward in making EV charging universally accessible. For now, it remains a test case, but if successful, it could pave the way for similar systems in other locations. EV Safe Charge has already worked with major brands like Porsche, Audi, and Harley-Davidson, so they clearly have the expertise to make this concept a reality.
