Prospect Heights puts new Squad 9 into service

Here's a statement from Prospect Heights Deputy Chief Drew Smith:

Prospect Heights Squad 9

The Prospect Heights Fire Department has officially retired its 18-year-old Squad 9 and introduced a brand-new squad pumper to take its place. The new unit will go into service on June 2nd, marking an important upgrade for the department.

The new Squad 9 is equipped with:

  • 4 crew members seated
  • 1,000-GPM pump
  • 500-gallon water tank
  • 90 gallons of foam
  • Front and rear winch
  • 500 feet of 5-inch hose
  • 600 feet of 2½-inch hose
  • 800 feet of 1¾-inch hose
  • Attack hose: 1¾ preconnects, 2½ x 600 ft, hi-rise packs, and master stream
  • Full ALS EMS equipment
  • Truck company tools including hand tools, saws, fans, tarps, and salvage gear
  • Auto extrication tools such as spreaders, cutters, rams, air bags, struts, cribbing, and air tools
  • Water and ice rescue gear like PFDs, exposure suits, throw bags, ropes, and RDCs
  • HazMat and TRT gear including pads, booms, decon setups, Level B suits, ropes, hardware, Stokes baskets, and hand tools

While the new Squad 9 is built on a commercial chassis, it retains all the same attack hose lines and critical equipment as the old unit. However, it no longer includes a cascade system or an inflatable boat. The inflatable boat can still be deployed via a different vehicle when needed.

This modernization ensures that our team is better prepared than ever to respond to emergencies with efficiency and safety in mind. We appreciate the support from the community and look forward to serving them with this upgraded resource.
