Prospect Heights puts new Squad 9 into service

Here's a statement from Prospect Heights Deputy Chief Drew Smith:

Prospect Heights Squad 9

The Prospect Heights Fire Department has officially retired its 18-year-old Squad 9 and introduced a brand-new squad pumper to take its place. The new unit will be officially in service starting June 2nd. This modernized vehicle is equipped with the latest tools and technology to better serve our community.

The new Squad 9 includes:

  • 4 seated firefighters
  • 1,000-GPM pump
  • 500-gallon water tank
  • 90 gallons of foam
  • Front and rear winch systems
  • 500 feet of 5-inch hose
  • 600 feet of 2½-inch hose
  • 800 feet of 1¾-inch hose
  • Attack hose: 1¾ preconnects, 2½ x 600 ft, high-rise packs, master stream
  • Full ALS EMS equipment
  • Truck company tools (hand tools, saws, fans, tarps, salvage gear)
  • Auto extrication gear (spreaders, cutters, rams, air bags, struts, cribbing, air tools)
  • Water and ice rescue gear (PFDs, exposure suits, throw bags, ropes, RDC)
  • HazMat and TRT gear (decontamination setup, level B suits, ropes, Stokes basket, hand tools)

While the new Squad 9 is built on a commercial chassis, it maintains the same attack hose configuration and essential equipment as the previous unit. However, it no longer includes a cascade system or an inflatable boat. That equipment can still be deployed by calling for specialized support, and it will be transported via another vehicle when needed.

We're excited about this upgrade and confident that the new Squad 9 will enhance our response capabilities and ensure the safety of our residents and first responders alike.
