A fatal accident occurred this morning on southbound I-57, causing a complete shutdown of all lanes near 159th Street in Markham, according to local authorities.
The incident took place just before 9:30 a.m., north of 159th Street, as reported by the Illinois State Police. A dump truck was involved and reportedly rolled over after hitting the concrete median barrier on the left side of the road.
Monique Bond, a spokesperson for the state police, said that the truck caught fire shortly after the collision, trapping the driver inside. The victim has been identified as 75-year-old Napoleon Brewer.
By around 11:30 a.m., all southbound lanes were closed due to the crash and the resulting debris. Officials said that traffic started to resume just before 3 p.m., after crews cleared a large amount of gravel from the roadway.
Emergency responders worked quickly to contain the fire and ensure the safety of nearby motorists. While no other injuries have been reported, the crash caused significant disruption to commuters in the area.
