Chinese Academy of Sciences sweet sorghum industrial technology achievements

The Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences promoted the development of the sweet sorghum industry in northwestern China through technological innovation, and achieved a series of gratifying results in the cultivation, storage, fermentation of sweet sorghum, and the development of strains and yeast products.
Sweet sorghum is a non-food crop, the growth of water consumption is only 1/3 of corn, per mu production up to 5 tons -10 tons, the stem juice is the ideal biomass feedstock for fermentation of alcohol and yeast culture. The leaves of sweet sorghum, stem slag after pressing, and grain are also good feeds. In northwestern China, there are vast sandy lands and saline-alkali lands. Due to the long sunshine hours and large temperature difference between day and night, it is particularly suitable for planting energy crops sweet sorghum. In recent ten years, the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has used heavy ion irradiation technology to carry out variety improvement on sweet sorghum and has cultivated high-yield and high-sugar sweet sorghum. This year, they also cultivated a sweet sorghum that was nearly 20 days old, and solved the problem that the frost in the northwest region affected the growth of sweet sorghum earlier.
At present, China's alcohol production enterprises generally use food as raw materials, which have high product costs and low profits. The Institute of Modern Physics solved the long-term storage problem of sweet sorghum sap through painstaking research and trials and trials, improved equipment, and adopted a new liquid fermentation technology to obtain 11.6% of the alcoholic beverage, which was produced through continuous distillation of three towers. Alcohol with a purity higher than 95% has a fermentation time of only 16 hours.
