Toray, Toho Tenax, and Mitsubishi Rayon Co., Ltd. Launch Carbon Fiber Recycling Business

Japan Toray, Toho Tenax (Teiren subsidiary), Mitsubishi Rayong and Mitsui Mining cooperated in the recycling of carbon fiber. The carbon fiber resin recovered from aircraft manufacturers, etc. is impregnated with a processed composite material to be subjected to a resin treatment, and a recycled carbon fiber powder is produced and sold. The production of reclaimed carbon fiber will be the responsibility of Mitsui Mining, which will produce special facilities or will be built in Omuta City, Fukuoka Prefecture. The initial investment is about 400 million yen, and the first annual output target is 400 tons.
The demand for lightweight high-strength carbon fibers in the fields of aircraft manufacturing and sporting goods is continuously increasing, and the used carbon fiber is mainly treated by landfill. Three companies with a global share of 70% of the carbon fiber market will work together to build a carbon fiber recycling system to further expand the demand and use of carbon fiber.
