Late Friday night, firefighters from Des Plaines were dispatched to a residential address at 555 Leahy Circle East after reports of a basement fire. Upon arrival, emergency responders encountered significant challenges due to the presence of hoarder conditions, which had been confirmed by the first arriving unit. The residents were already safely outside, and firefighters faced difficulties accessing the structure due to the cluttered environment.
As units approached, a visible header was noted, prompting an immediate upgrade to a working fire. Before entering, crews cut several vent holes in the roof as part of their initial response. Due to the complexity of the situation, firefighters were eventually ordered to pull back and adopt a defensive strategy. The fire had spread from the basement to the second floor, with portions of the first floor also compromised. Hand lines were deployed through windows and doorways, but the dense clutter made it extremely difficult to reach the fire's origin.
After withdrawing personnel from the interior, the incident was escalated to a Box Alarm to bring in additional resources. Firefighters then allowed the blaze to burn until it became visible and accessible from the exterior. A tower ladder was used to deploy a ground-level master stream through the front door and living room, and later positioned above the house to target the fire that had vented through the roof. Hand lines were placed on all sides of the structure to contain the flames.
By around 4:00 AM, the bulk of the fire had been contained, though crews remained on scene for several more hours to ensure full suppression and to manage any lingering hot spots. The fire involved multiple departments, including mutual aid from Prospect Heights, Mount Prospect, North Maine, Elk Grove Township, Wheeling, Park Ridge, Chicago Squad 7, Rosemont, Bensenville, and Glenview.
Photos from the scene captured the intensity of the fire, showing heavy smoke pouring from windows and flames engulfing parts of the home. These images, taken by Larry Shapiro, provide a vivid look at the challenging conditions faced by firefighters during the incident.
