Box Alarm fire in Prospect Heights, 5-3-19

On May 3, 2019, at approximately 12:28 p.m., Prospect Heights firefighters responded to a reported fire at 1535 Cove Drive, a four-unit townhouse. The incident was initially classified as a fire in the laundry room but quickly escalated to a working fire before the first units arrived. When Battalion 9 reached the scene, they reported flames visible through the second-floor roof, prompting the activation of a Box Alarm. First-arriving units encountered heavy fire coming from the front door, with the laundry room fully engulfed and flames spreading up the exterior of the building toward the roof. Firefighters swiftly suppressed the fire on the first floor, then moved to tackle the flames on the second floor and within the structure. Fortunately, damage to the adjacent units was minimal. Multiple fire companies were dispatched to the scene, including Prospect Heights Engine 39, Engine 9, Tower 9, Battalion 9, and chiefs 901 and 900; Wheeling Engine 23, Engine 42, Truck 24, Battalion 24, and Chief 2401; Mount Prospect Engine 14 and Battalion 3; Des Plaines Tower 63 and Chief 6101; Northbrook Tower 12 and Ambulance 12; Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Squad 51; Arlington Heights Engine 2 and Chief 101; Northfield Squad 29; North Maine Engine 1 and Battalion 1; Palatine Ambulance 82; Glenview Ambulance 8; Long Grove Battalion 55; and Buffalo Grove Engine 26. A police officer sustained minor injuries while assisting in the evacuation of residents from the affected unit and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Photos from the scene captured firefighters in action, including one pulling a hose from an engine, another venting the roof, and a firefighter battling the flames with a hose line. Another image showed a firefighter covered in debris after the intense firefighting efforts. The incident highlights the quick response and coordination among multiple fire departments, ensuring the safety of residents and minimizing property damage.
