Firefighters from Prospect Heights were dispatched to 1535 Cove Drive at 12:28 p.m. on May 3, 2019, in response to a reported fire in the laundry room of a four-unit townhouse. Upon arrival, the incident was upgraded to a working fire before the first units reached the scene. When Battalion 9 arrived, they reported flames visible through the second-floor roof, prompting the activation of a Box Alarm.
First-responding units encountered heavy fire coming out of the front door, with the laundry room fully engulfed and flames spreading up the exterior of the building toward the roof. The fire on the first floor was quickly suppressed, and crews then moved to tackle the blaze on the second floor and in the attic. Fortunately, damage to adjacent units was minimal.
The scene was heavily staffed, with multiple fire companies responding. Prospect Heights Engine 39, Engine 9, Tower 9, Battalion 9, and Chiefs 901 and 900 were among the first on the scene. Additional units included Wheeling Engine 23, Engine 42, Truck 24, Battalion 24, and Chief 2401; Mount Prospect Engine 14 and Battalion 3; Des Plaines Tower 63 and Chief 6101; Northbrook Tower 12 and Ambulance 12; Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Squad 51; Arlington Heights Engine 2 and Chief 101; Northfield Squad 29; North Maine Engine 1 and Battalion 1; Palatine Ambulance 82; Glenview Ambulance 8; Long Grove Battalion 55; and Buffalo Grove Engine 26.
A police officer sustained minor injuries while assisting with evacuations and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Several photos captured the intense firefighting efforts, showing firefighters pulling hoses, venting the roof, and battling flames. The images, taken by Larry Shapiro, provide a vivid look at the challenging conditions faced by emergency responders during the incident. A slideshow of additional photos is available for viewing.
