Vintage Chicago 5-11 Alarm fire, 4-26-62

Here's a message from Eric Haak:

Below are some photos taken on Thursday, April 26, 1962. The fire was classified as a 5-11 +1 alarm at 2710 South Throop Street. The building belonged to the National Plywood Company and was located along the future route of the Stevenson Expressway. During the early 1960s, there were several large fires in buildings that were scheduled for demolition to make way for the Dan Ryan and Stevenson Expressways. While I'm not certain if this fire was the result of arson, it occurred just months before the expressway construction began. It's also interesting to note that this location was just one block south of where Engine 28’s current station would be built a year or so later. The time recorded was 1:36 in the afternoon.

These images offer a rare glimpse into a moment in Chicago’s history, capturing the scene of a fire that likely played a role in the city's evolving landscape. As the Stevenson Expressway neared completion, many old buildings were demolished, making way for modern infrastructure. This event serves as a reminder of how quickly urban environments can change—and how important it is to preserve these historical moments through photographs like these.
