The Huntley Fire Protection District responded to a second-alarm fire at an apartment complex on Sunday, which tragically resulted in the death of a resident. The incident occurred in a six-unit Woodcreek Apartments building located at 11702 Woodcreek Drive in Huntley. Firefighters arrived at 6:12 a.m., responding to a blaze that started in the first-floor unit of Allen "Al" R. Jacobs, a 47-year-old man who lived there.
According to the Daily Herald, Jacobs had suffered a severe car accident as a teenager that left him paralyzed from the waist down. His longtime friend Randy Albrecht, from Lake in the Hills, said Jacobs had always feared that his death might come suddenly, leaving him unable to escape. Standing outside the burned-out building on Sunday, Albrecht reflected on the life of his friend, whose life was cut short by the early morning fire.
The fire quickly spread through the second and third floors of the wood-frame building, prompting 15 neighboring fire departments to assist the Huntley Fire Protection District. One firefighter sustained a minor injury and was taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin for treatment before being released.
The Chicago Tribune reported that McHenry County officials confirmed the victim’s identity as Allen R. Jacobs, who was found deceased inside his unit. The fire displaced 10 residents and led to a two-alarm response, according to Battalion Chief Tim Flannigan. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but no other injuries were reported besides the one firefighter.
Residents of the Woodcreek Apartments are now dealing with the aftermath, as they try to recover from the loss of a neighbor and the destruction of their home. Local officials are working to provide temporary housing and support to those affected.
