Shenzhen Advanced Institute developed a black phosphorus optical fiber sensor

Recently, researchers Lu Jiancheng and Yu Xuefeng of the Institute of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in collaboration with professor Chen Xianfeng of the Bangor University in the United Kingdom have successfully developed the first optical fiber chemical sensor based on black phosphorus to realize ultra-sensitive detection of heavy metal ions.

Tilted fiber grating is a new type of fiber optic device. The large angle tilted grating structure can couple the core optical mode forward to the fiber cladding and form a series of discrete resonance peaks at a specific wavelength. The coupling of light will follow the outside world. Changes in the refractive index of the medium and the like change. Therefore, tilted fiber gratings are ideal photonic devices for sensing applications. Black phosphorus is a two-dimensional semiconductor material with direct band gap that has attracted wide attention in recent years. It has a unique two-dimensional planar structure, an ultra-high specific surface area, numerous active sites, and a broad spectral response range from visible to infrared. , In the optical detection shows a huge application prospects.

In this study, the research team combined for the first time the combination of black phosphorus and tilted fiber gratings, revealing the unique optical modulation effect of the black phosphorus nano-layers. With the unique optical structure of tilted gratings, a new type of ultra-sensitive chemical sensor was constructed. In this study, an in-situ layering modification technique was developed to efficiently attach black phosphor nanoplates to the surface of fiber devices. Different thicknesses of black phosphor nanolayers exhibit unique modulation of optical signals. Using this feature, the black phosphorus fiber sensor can detect heavy metal lead ions at the sub-ppb concentration level, with ultra-high sensitivity, ultra-low detection limit, and a broad range of concentration detection. The successful development of a new black-phosphor fiber sensor will provide a superior optical detection platform for chemical and biological sensing, thus promoting the application of research on chemical biosensors.

The relevant research results are published in Sensors and ActuatorsB: Chemical. The study was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation and the EU's Seventh Framework Program.
