Put green into every detail --- Documentary on environmental protection in Tianjin Soda Plant

Tianjin Soda Plant, often regarded as the birthplace of China's soda industry, has long been committed to green development and sustainable practices. As a company holding two "China Top Brand Products" titles, it has consistently prioritized environmental protection, embedding the concept of "creating a green ammonia base" into every aspect of its operations. Over the years, the plant has made significant progress in managing waste, optimizing the environment, conserving resources, and implementing clean production technologies. During the "10th Five-Year Plan" period, the plant invested 90 million yuan in advanced pollution control projects, achieving remarkable results in reducing emissions and reusing waste materials. For instance, it completed dust control at the top of lime kilns by constructing seven towers and installing four dust treatment systems, with all recovered dust being reused. This project became a model for the soda industry and earned national patents. Additionally, the #4 high-pressure boiler’s ammonia desulfurization system was built, passing environmental acceptance. It is the largest of its kind in China and the first to process desulfurization by-products into agricultural ammonium sulfate that meets national standards. In terms of technological innovation, Tianjin Soda Plant took the lead in adopting new bag filters to achieve dry treatment of ammonium chloride dust, improving efficiency and reducing exhaust dust concentration. The project won the second prize for scientific and technological progress from the Soda Industry Association. The plant also replaced old dust collectors with PPDC-type air box pulse bag filters, upgrading soot removal systems and significantly improving performance. By using electrostatic precipitators to recover dry gas from four kiln furnaces, it changed traditional methods of treating soda ash furnace gas. It also upgraded the oil-water separator and implemented an advanced air flotation oil recovery system, meeting wastewater discharge standards and recovering waste oil. An investment of over 15 million yuan enabled the carbon black wastewater treatment and reuse project, where carbon black was separated and sold, while clear liquid was reused, achieving both environmental and economic benefits. In resource conservation and comprehensive utilization, the plant focuses on minimizing environmental impact through green ammonia-based processes. Each year, the limestone calcination process generates about 80,000 tons of waste sand, which the plant now fully reuses through improved boiler control systems. A 2500m³/h seawater circulation plant helps reduce salt consumption in soda ash production, saving fresh water and lowering pollution. Fly ash and slag from industrial boilers were once a major issue, but in 2003, the plant partnered with RISTARDA to produce 400,000 cubic meters of building blocks annually, effectively utilizing fly ash. Additionally, CO₂ from soda ash production is used to create edible liquid CO₂, supplied to Coca-Cola and Pepsi, capturing a premium market. Waste mother liquor from heavy soda ash production is turned into sodium sulfite products, offering both environmental and economic value. To enhance the surrounding environment, the plant collaborated with institutions like the National Environmental Protection Agency and Tianjin University to develop soil engineering technology for soda slag. Not only did it treat the old soda slag mountain, but in 2002, it transformed the site into a 330,000-square-meter Ziyun Park, featuring beautiful landscapes, flowers, and greenery. This park became the world's only environmentally friendly park built entirely from industrial waste.
