Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:
Aurora Regional Fire Museum officials are reporting that, despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, there are positive signs that the museum is gradually returning to a more normal state. The facility, located at 53 N. Broadway in Aurora, reopened in January following the state’s updated COVID-19 mitigation guidelines.
Executive director Brian Failing shared that the museum has been operating with its regular schedule—open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.—and has seen consistent visitor traffic, especially in the afternoons. “We’ve had up to around 30 visitors per week so far,†he said. “As the weather gets better and we move into spring and summer, we’re hoping for a steady increase in attendance.â€
The museum continues to follow current health protocols, including mandatory mask-wearing and social distancing measures. Some interactive exhibits have been temporarily removed, and high-touch areas have been minimized to ensure guest safety.
Despite the challenges, the museum has not slowed down its efforts to bring new experiences to visitors. In the past two months, they've installed several new exhibits, including half a dozen fire department-themed photographs and a traveling display from the National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Association. This exhibit highlights the evolution of emergency medical care, from battlefield medicine to modern civilian practices, and will be on display for several months.
Looking ahead, the museum has exciting plans in the works. A new "Safety in the Home" exhibit is set to launch this summer, focusing on fire prevention and home safety tips. Additionally, a fall initiative is being developed to commemorate two significant events, further expanding the museum’s educational and historical offerings.
