How to Clean a Hydraulic Reservoir
Updated: December 22, 2023Keeping your hydraulic reservoir clean is crucial for the smooth and efficient operation of your machinery. Over time, contaminants like dirt, moisture, and old fluid can build up, leading to performance issues and even equipment failure. Regular cleaning and maintenance help extend the life of your system and prevent costly repairs.
If you're looking to clean your hydraulic reservoir properly, follow this step-by-step guide to ensure your system runs at peak performance and remains reliable for years to come.

1. Drain the System
Begin by draining the hydraulic system while the fluid is still warm. This helps remove any trapped debris or water that might be mixed in with the oil. Make sure to check for any unusual buildup in accumulators, cylinders, or filters during this process.
If the fluid appears cloudy or has water contamination, use desiccant air to dry out the system. Replace the reservoir’s filters as part of this initial step.
2. Clean the Reservoir
Use a lint-free cloth to wipe down the inside of the reservoir. Remove any loose paint chips, dirt, or sludge that may have accumulated over time. Be thorough—this step is essential for preventing future contamination.
3. Flush with Low-Viscosity Fluid
Once the reservoir is clean, flush it with a low-viscosity fluid that’s compatible with your system. This helps dislodge any remaining particles from the walls of the tank. In some cases, a hydraulic cleaning solvent may be used, depending on the type of reservoir.
Flush the system in a turbulent manner to shake loose any stubborn debris. Afterward, drain the reservoir quickly and replace the filters again.
4. Bleed and Pump the Vent
Fill the reservoir about three-quarters full, then run the pump for 15 seconds before turning it off. Repeat this cycle—on for 15 seconds, off for 45 seconds—three times. This helps purge any air trapped in the system and ensures proper circulation.
5. Test the Pump
Run the pump for one minute with the pressure pump open, then let it rest. Repeat this process a couple of times, making sure not to let the pump run longer than five minutes at a time. Lift the relief valve to check for proper flow and allow the system to rest for at least five more minutes.
6. Start the Pump
Operate each actuator individually while monitoring the return of fluid to the reservoir. After each actuator is used, shut the system down and let it sit. Keep an eye on the fluid level and top it up to around 50% if needed.
7. Refill and Test the Reservoir
Refill the reservoir to 75% capacity and run the system in five-minute intervals. After each interval, bleed the air out of the system. Continue running the system for 30 minutes straight, then replace the filters once more.
Check for signs of cross-contamination or poor performance. If necessary, replace the filters again for optimal results.
8. Test for System Stability
After completing the cleaning process, run the hydraulic reservoir for no more than six hours. This gives you enough time to test for stability without risking damage to the system. Replace the filters one final time and take a fluid sample to confirm everything is working correctly.
Once you’ve done this a couple of times, you’ll be well-equipped to teach others how to maintain a hydraulic reservoir effectively.
