The US Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory will extend its contract with Centras, but will continue with the US Centrifuge Technology Demonstration Project at a lower level. Centrus was reorganized last year by U.S. Uranium Enrichment Corporation (USEC). According to the American Centrifuge Technology Demonstration and Operational Agreement (ACTDO) signed in May 2014, Centras is the contractor of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory to conduct "research, development and demonstration" of this technology.
Centrus uses ACTDO's revenue and has been running a large number of centrifuges in Picton, Ohio, "to prove the long-term performance and reliability of centrifuges under actual operating conditions."
The new contract period from October 1, 2015 to September 30, 2016 does not rule out the possibility of extension. The funds will be reduced by approximately 60% to $35 million per year. The scope of activities will be limited to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee but will not continue to support Picton's centrifuge operation.
