MIT new solar cell technology: energy conversion rate exceeded twice

Most single-layer silicon solar cells, due to their ability to use only a particular wavelength of light in the sun, have an efficiency limit of approximately 32% absorption and conversion from radiation, which is known as the "Hicks-Quiets limit."

The MIT research team recently published a new solar thermophotovoltaic device (STPV) in the journal Nature Energy that dramatically improves energy conversion rates and reduces waste heat from power generation.

Traditional solar cells can only convert certain wavelengths of sunlight in the sunlight into electricity and can not use the same portion of the heat at the same time and have watched them dissipate in the environment.

The MIT research team's new solar cells contain an extra layer of nanotube nanotube structure made of nanophotonic crystal that absorbs both light and heat and converts it to light of a particular wavelength.
