Ministry of Environmental Protection: Formulation of National V Oil Standard

June 5 was the World Environment Day. The China New Zealand Office held a press conference to inform the “2011 China Environmental Status Bulletin” and the China Network live broadcast. On the environmental issues brought about by the development process, Vice Minister of Environmental Protection Wu Xiaoqing stated at the press conference that he will actively work with relevant departments to formulate the national V oil product standards in order to reduce the pollution problems caused by automobiles in the process of urbanization.

Wu Xiaoqing said that China is a developing country and development is our top priority. Some of the environmental issues brought about in the development process must arouse our high level of attention, including the environmental problems brought about by the process of urbanization.

Wu Xiaoqing believes that automobile exhaust pollution in cities is indeed a serious environmental problem. In the process of urbanization, environmental issues brought about by the rapid development of automobiles must be highly regarded. Therefore, the country and localities have taken corresponding measures. For example, Beijing has taken the lead in the use of the fifth phase of gasoline and diesel fuel for vehicles in China. This is a very good measure to prevent car pollution.

He also stated that the Beijing V standard is equivalent to the current European V standard in Europe. According to this standard, the sulphur content of Beijing's oil products will be reduced from 50PPM to 10PPM, and the environmental indicators of automotive oil products have been further improved. Research shows that oil upgrading contributes a lot to the emission reduction of automobile exhaust gas. We will also actively work with relevant agencies to formulate the National V Oil Standard to reduce the pollution caused by automobiles in the process of urbanization. At the same time, efforts will be made to intensify the environmental monitoring of motor vehicle pollution emissions, further increase the elimination of yellow-label vehicles, and encourage qualified regions to implement the national V motor vehicle emission standards in advance so as to comprehensively improve the level of motor vehicle pollution prevention and control in China.
