Many universities in the United States want to use algae to develop diesel fuel blends

According to foreign media reports, a team of experts from the University of Michigan conducted research collaborations with researchers at Penn State and the University of Delaware, which involved $2.5 million in funding. Looking for a viable solution to address climate change and air pollution.

Creating economical algae fuels for vehicles is not new. They choose algae as a breakthrough in research and development. The R&D team wanted to separate the oil from the algae and add it to a viable diesel fuel mixture that could be used as a renewable energy source.

The team first selected the right algae species from tens of thousands of algae. The research community will attempt to finalize an algae species that needs to be resistant to disease and grow rapidly in larger volumes, and that the chemical properties of the algae need to match the engine. Unfortunately, algae are prone to water quality, and pure algae biofuels seem to be less viable.

Compared to gasoline engines, diesel engines can significantly improve fuel economy and traction advantages.

The research team pointed out that diesel vehicles and equipment are primarily responsible for nearly half of the US transportation industry's nitrogen oxides and two-thirds of particulate pollutants, and such particulates also cause premature death.

However, the researchers pointed out that proper design improvements to diesel engines ensure that particulate matter after fuel combustion is kept as low as possible, helping to limit greenhouse gas emissions.

Boehman said: "Diesel engines play a very important role in improving fuel economy and reducing CO2 emissions from tail gas, which is one of the effective ways to reduce vehicle carbon emissions."

The US Department of Energy's grant is dedicated to the development of diesel fuel, and the process envisioned by researchers may be used for other fuels.

Professor Cardinale said: "The team has designed a variety of biofuels that are chemically compatible with current needs or can be paired with diesel engines to pave the way for future biofuel designs."
