On December 21, 2017, Weichai Power and Westport Fuel Systems signed an innovative cooperation agreement in Jinan, Shandong Province. Both parties will jointly develop natural gas engines with high-pressure in-cylinder direct-injection technology, and will realize the landing of key components in Shandong.

Westport Fuel Systems is the world leader in natural gas engine technology research and development. The independently developed high pressure in-cylinder direct injection technology has obvious competitive advantages and leads the development direction of high-end gas power.

For a long time, both sides have maintained good and close cooperation. According to the agreement, the two parties confirmed that they will jointly develop a six-engine direct-injection natural gas for high-pressure cylinders, which will increase the thermal efficiency of natural gas engines from the current 39% to 42.5%, which is equivalent to a 20% reduction in gas consumption.

The two parties also agreed to jointly develop a direct-injection technology for natural gas engines with high-pressure cylinders in the 3.0 version, achieving an increase in thermal efficiency from 42.5% to 45%, which is equivalent to a 40% reduction in gas consumption compared with current standards.

It is understood that Weichai has been engaged in R&D and manufacturing of natural gas engine technology for 20 years. Currently, the market share of natural gas engines for heavy-duty trucks in China has reached 70%. The products are favored by customers and have established clear leading advantages.
