Daqing Successfully Developed Polypropylene Ball Catalyst

Recently, a significant breakthrough was achieved at Daqing Huake Co., Ltd.'s Polypropylene Plant No. 2. The intermittent main unit successfully operated using the polypropylene spherical catalyst developed by the Daqing Chemical Research Center. A total of 5.62 tons of high-quality polypropylene products were produced during the trial run, all meeting the required standards. This marks a major step forward in reducing the country's reliance on imported polypropylene catalysts. Polypropylene catalysts play a crucial role in the production of polypropylene, a widely used plastic material. For many years, China had to rely heavily on imported catalysts, which came with high costs and limited supply. Since 2004, the Daqing Chemical Research Center has been actively working on developing its own polypropylene catalyst technology. Their research focused on improving the carrier preparation process and designing new electron donors to enhance performance. Currently, the center has completed the scale-up studies for both the 5L carrier preparation and the 3L catalyst production. The experimental results have shown that the catalyst meets all necessary performance criteria, including high activity, good bulk density, and consistent quality. The resulting spherical polypropylene catalyst demonstrates excellent performance and stability. One of the key advantages of this catalyst is its stable process control, which leads to consistent polymerization and reduced fine particle formation. Additionally, it has a low active metal content, which helps reduce the amount of activator and external electron donor needed, lowering overall production costs and minimizing the ash content in the final polymer product. With the increasing domestic demand for polypropylene, the development of an advanced, cost-effective catalyst is essential. It is reported that PetroChina Group currently has a polypropylene production capacity exceeding 1.86 million tons per year, accounting for approximately 34.6% of the nation’s total capacity. This new catalyst is expected to play a vital role in enhancing efficiency and competitiveness in the market.
