Recently, positive developments have been reported from the intermittent main unit of Polypropylene Plant No. 2 at Daqing Huake Co., Ltd. The polypropylene spherical catalyst developed by the Daqing Chemical Research Center has successfully entered pilot production, resulting in a total of 5.62 tons of qualified polypropylene products. This marks a significant step forward in reducing reliance on imported polypropylene catalysts.
Polypropylene catalysts play a crucial role in the production of polypropylene, a widely used polymer in various industries. For many years, China had to rely heavily on imported catalysts, which were not only expensive but also limited supply chain flexibility. Since 2004, the Daqing Chemical Research Center has been actively researching and developing advanced polypropylene catalyst technologies, focusing on carrier preparation processes and the design and synthesis of new electron donors.
Currently, the center has completed both 5L-scale carrier preparation and 3L-scale catalyst scale-up studies. The experimental results show that the catalyst meets all performance specifications, including high activity, good bulk density, and excellent particle morphology. The resulting spherical polypropylene catalyst demonstrates superior performance and stability.
One of the key advantages of this catalyst is its stable process control, consistent release of active sites during polymerization, low fines content, and high bulk density. Additionally, due to its lower active metal content, it reduces the required amount of activators and external electron donors, leading to lower production costs and reduced ash content in the final polymer product.
According to industry sources, PetroChina Group currently has a polypropylene production capacity exceeding 1.86 million tons per year, accounting for approximately 34.6% of the total domestic production capacity. With the successful development of this domestically produced catalyst, the company is now better positioned to enhance its competitiveness and reduce dependency on foreign suppliers. This achievement represents a major milestone in China's efforts to achieve self-reliance in critical chemical technologies.
