At the 2nd China Agricultural Products Processing Industry Exhibition, a key event highlighting advancements in the sector, it was revealed that China's agricultural product processing industry is undergoing significant transformation. Five major trends are shaping its development: accelerated growth, deeper processing, expansion of large-scale enterprises, technological innovation, and optimized industrial layout.
According to an official from the Ministry of Agriculture, the sector has experienced strong momentum in recent years. One of the most notable developments is the rapid growth of the industry. The number of processing enterprises has surpassed 70,000, with output value reaching nearly 4.2 trillion yuan. These enterprises now employ almost one-third of the country’s industrial workforce. During the "Tenth Five-Year Plan" period, the industry’s output grew at an annual rate of 14%, showing a clear upward trajectory.
Another key trend is the deepening level of processing. The proportion of primary processing—such as cleaning, sorting, and basic packaging—has reached around 50%, while secondary or deep processing, which involves more complex transformations like preservation, packaging, and value addition, now accounts for over 30%. This represents a significant increase compared to the end of the "Ninth Five-Year Plan," where this figure was about 10 to 15 percentage points lower.
The third trend is the scaling up of enterprises. About 30% of processing companies have located themselves in industrial parks, which helps streamline operations and improve efficiency. Enterprises with a scale of 50 million yuan or more are growing at a rate of 20% annually, indicating a shift toward larger, more organized production models.
Fourth, there is a strong emphasis on scientific and technological innovation. Advanced technologies such as biotechnology, storage solutions, modern packaging materials, and automated equipment are being increasingly adopted. This shift signals that the industry is moving toward high-value, technology-driven processing, aiming to boost productivity and competitiveness.
Lastly, the industrial layout is becoming more strategic. Regions across the country are developing specialized processing zones. For example, Inner Mongolia focuses on dairy processing, Henan and Hebei on wheat, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang on aquatic products, Jilin and the Northeast on meat, and Shandong on vegetables. These regional clusters not only enhance local economies but also support the growth of county-level industries by creating jobs and driving rural development.
Overall, these trends reflect a dynamic and evolving agricultural processing sector that is becoming more efficient, innovative, and regionally focused.
