What is an Aluminum Plate and Its Thickness Range
An aluminum plate is a flat, rectangular sheet made from aluminum ingots through rolling and processing. It typically has a thickness greater than 0.2mm and less than 500mm, with a width over 200mm and a length under 16 meters. These are commonly referred to as aluminum sheets or plates. With the development of large-scale equipment, some aluminum plates can now reach a maximum width of up to 600mm.Aluminum plates come in various types, including pure aluminum plates, alloy aluminum plates, thin plates, medium-thick plates, and patterned plates. They are widely used across many industries due to their lightweight, durability, and corrosion resistance.
Aluminum Sheets Are Usually Divided into Two Main Categories:
1. Based on Alloy Composition:
- High-purity aluminum plate: Made from high-purity aluminum (over 99.9% purity)
- Pure aluminum plate: Made mainly from pure aluminum
- Alloy aluminum plate: Composed of aluminum and other alloys, such as aluminum-copper, aluminum-manganese, aluminum-silicon, and aluminum-magnesium series
- Clad aluminum plate or welded plate: Special-purpose materials created by combining different materials
- Aluminum-clad aluminum sheet: An aluminum sheet with a thin layer of aluminum on the surface for specific uses
2. Based on Thickness (in mm):
- Sheet (aluminum sheet): 0.15–2.0
- Standard sheet (aluminum sheet): 2.0–6.0
- Aluminum plate: 6.0–25.0
- Thick plate (aluminum plate): 25–200
Applications of Aluminum Plates
Aluminum plates are used in a wide range of fields, including lighting systems, solar reflectors, building exteriors, interior decoration (such as ceilings and walls), furniture and cabinets, elevators, signs and nameplates, photo frames, household appliances like refrigerators and microwave ovens, aerospace and military applications (such as China's large aircraft and Shenzhou spacecraft), mechanical part machining, mold manufacturing, chemical and insulation pipeline coatings, and high-quality shipbuilding.
Classification of Aluminum Sheets
The classification of aluminum alloys is based on their composition. For example, 7075-T651 aluminum plate belongs to the 7 series, which refers to aluminum-zinc-magnesium-copper alloys. Aluminum and its alloys are divided into nine groups. Among them, the 1, 3, 5, 6, and 7 series are the most commonly used in practical applications, while others are rarely used.
The first category: 1 series – industrial pure aluminum
The second category: 2 series – aluminum-copper alloys
The third category: 3 series – aluminum-manganese alloys
The fourth category: 4 series – aluminum-silicon alloys
The fifth category: 5 series – aluminum-magnesium alloys
The sixth category: 6 series – aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloys
The seventh category: 7 series – aluminum-zinc-magnesium-copper alloys
The eighth category: 8 series – other alloys
Ninth category: 9 series – spare alloys

Aluminum (Al): balance; Silicon (Si): 0.25%; Copper (Cu): 0.10%; Magnesium (Mg): 2.2–2.8%; Zinc (Zn): 0.10%; Manganese (Mn): 0.10%; Chromium (Cr): 0.15–0.35%; Iron (Fe): 0.4%.
Tensile strength (σb): 170–305 MPa; Conditional yield strength (σ0.2) ≥ 65 MPa; Elastic modulus (E): 69.3–70.7 GPa; Annealing temperature: 345°C.
