On May 4, 2011, the Waukegan Fire Department responded to a fire at the vacant Salvation Army store located at 133 S. Genesee Street. The blaze, which was later determined to be an act of arson, resulted in the total destruction of the building. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, though it took multiple fire departments several hours to bring the flames under control.
A suspect has since been arrested in connection with the incident. According to a report from *The Chicago Tribune*, Gregory D. Flesher, a local business owner and former mayoral candidate, was taken into custody on charges of arson and criminal damage to property. Authorities allege that Flesher used bolt cutters to gain entry into the abandoned building early on the morning of May 4 and then set the fire using fireworks and gasoline.
Flesher is also under investigation for a separate fire that occurred in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, on May 19. While he has not been formally charged in that case, officials say he admitted to starting that fire during questioning about the Waukegan incident.
