House fire in Highland Park, 2-12-15

Highland Park firefighters responded to a fire at 24245 St. Johns Avenue this afternoon after workers reported flames in the insulation between the second floor and the attic. The two-story, unoccupied home was undergoing renovations at the time. Upon arrival, first-arriving units encountered heavy smoke and upgraded the alarm to Code 4 for a working fire. Firefighters quickly launched an aggressive attack, successfully containing the blaze to the area of origin. Mutual aid support included Highwood Truck 37, Lake Forest Engine 412, Deerfield-Bannockburn Truck 20, and Northfields Truck 29. On scene, Highland Park Fire Department deployed both ambulances, all three engines, along with the chief and battalion chief. Emergency responders worked efficiently to control the fire and prevent it from spreading further. Photos from the scene were captured by local photographer Larry Shapiro. His images show the extent of the damage and the efforts of the crews on the ground. Additional photos are available at shapirophotography.net. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials believe it may have been related to the ongoing remodeling work. No injuries were reported, and the property remains under evaluation for structural safety. Residents in the area were advised to stay alert and avoid the area until the situation is fully resolved.
