The Southtown Star recently published an article highlighting a significant donation of medical equipment to several local fire departments by the Franciscan Alliance Foundation St. James Health. According to a press release, the foundation has provided state-of-the-art 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) machines to fire departments in Country Club Hills, Homewood, and University Park. These devices will be installed in ambulances to enhance emergency care for patients experiencing heart-related issues.
This advanced technology enables first responders to perform 12-lead ECGs on-site during emergencies, particularly for individuals who may be suffering from a heart attack—such as ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), a severe type of heart attack. The system can detect abnormal heart rhythms and transmit real-time data directly to Franciscan St. James Health. This allows the hospital’s emergency department and cardiac catheterization lab to prepare for the patient’s arrival while they are still being transported, potentially saving critical time.
The American Heart Association reports that nearly 400,000 people in the U.S. experience STEMI each year. Research shows that using 12-lead ECGs before arriving at the hospital can significantly reduce the “door to balloon†time—the time it takes to open a blocked artery during a heart attack. Studies have found that activating the cath lab while the patient is en route leads to the most effective outcomes.
Dr. Daniel Netluch, chief medical officer at Franciscan St. James, emphasized the importance of this initiative: “Our goal is to shorten the time it takes to get patients to treatment. By gaining this crucial information while the patient is in transit, we can save up to 20 to 30 minutes, which can make a huge difference in preserving heart muscle and saving lives.â€
In addition to these partnerships, Franciscan St. James has also collaborated with communities such as Chicago Heights, Frankfort, Matteson, and Monee. These efforts have helped the hospital become the first and only south suburban facility to receive Chest Pain Center accreditation from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care.
Thanks, Dan.
