Chen Zutao, who is honored by the industry as "one of the founders of the Chinese auto industry," is now 80 years old. Since joining the Chinese auto industry in 1951, he has made important contributions to the preparation and command of FAW, BAIC, NAC, and FAW. He has also served as chief engineer and general manager of China Automotive Industry Corporation.

In more than half a century of car career, Chen Zutao's experience has also become a precious and vivid "historical document" of the Chinese automobile industry. “At the time we were engaged in the project of Santana, which was approved by Deng Xiaoping. At that time, in the era of planned economy, it was first necessary to listen to the opinions of the Planning Commission. It was just like family planning that there was no one more birth. It was also not allowed to make small cars.” Chen Zutao recalled, “However, a person in charge of the Planning Committee I once found that, at the time, the annual output of the auto industry was 220,000 (mainly trucks) too much, and it was proposed to be reduced to 180,000.”

Chen Zutao obviously does not agree with this view. In 1982, he told the person in charge of the Planning Commission: "You can't drop. The Chinese auto industry just started with 220,000 cars. How do you drop? I don't only support trucks, but also cars."

“How did you mention cars and cars as a product of the bourgeois lifestyle?” Chen Zutao was quickly refuted.

Chen Zutao then asked: "How do you go to work? How do you get off work?"

Until about 1983, when China National Gas Corporation was established, Chen Zutao became the first chief engineer. Things only took a turn for the better.

“At that time, the Shanghai automobile project had been discussed for four or five years. It was to produce Santana cars, but the country did not approve. The final report passed Deng Xiaoping’s hand through the channels. Deng Xiaoping made it very clear that small cars can be joint ventures.” Recalls, "After Shanghai Santana was approved in 1983, in 1984, we began assembling Santana with German parts."

By the 1990s, the Chinese sedan market had almost no competitors other than Santana. "This can really make money, look back, when the chairman of the German Volkswagen was far-sighted, because at that time to go on a sedan project, we traveled all over the world and did not run into other companies to see the Chinese auto industry. Toyota, Kia We all ran, and nobody would cooperate with us to produce cars,” said Chen Zutao.

Behind the rise of Japanese cars

"When the Chinese auto industry has had some prestige, Toyota Motor Development was not very strong at that time." Chen Zutao told the "First Financial Daily", "At that time Toyota, Nissan's boss invited me to visit Japan, but did not The reason for this is because I put forward the 'When will you give us automotive technology? When will I visit your Japanese automobile industry?'

"At that time, Japanese auto companies told me what you guys were doing in the auto industry. My car produces 10 million cars a year. You buy enough, why bother spending that energy in the auto industry? This is their basic concept. We were in 1984. In 1985, Japan imported 400,000 cars at a time, including cars of a very large size, because public vehicles had to sit when they were officials. So when Japan had a sweet taste, we advised us not to drive cars.” Chen Zutao recalled. .

In fact, the Japanese car is a "late latecomer" to the Chinese auto industry. “Chinese cars have been almost joint ventures. Toyota and Nissan came in. It was very late. It was Japanese arrogance, but in the end it had to come in.”

Nowadays, regardless of whether it is in the global market or the local Chinese market, the development momentum of Japanese cars has almost surpassed European and American cars. It is worth mentioning that Guangzhou Toyota Camry sold more than 170,000 vehicles in 2007. Chen Zutao believes that with the success of the three major companies Toyota, Honda, and Nissan, the automobile industry in Guangzhou has now become the headquarters of Japanese cars.
