A fire broke out late at night in the cooking ventilation system and rooftop exhaust fans of Hugo’s Frog Bar, located inside the Rivers Casino. The incident occurred shortly after 10 p.m., and no injuries were reported. According to the Des Plaines Fire Department, the fire was quickly brought under control and fully extinguished by just after 11 p.m. The flames were contained primarily to the kitchen hood and duct system, along with part of the roof, causing minimal water damage elsewhere.
One guest who was evacuated during the incident sought medical attention and was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital for a non-life-threatening condition. Although the casino reopened early on Monday, Hugo’s Frog Bar remained closed as a precaution.
Under Illinois’ current COVID-19 guidelines, casinos are allowed to operate at 50% capacity while maintaining their usual 24-hour schedule. This means that Rivers Casino is open around the clock, but with reduced occupancy to ensure safety.
The fire was reportedly caused by accumulated grease igniting within the ventilation system. Authorities are investigating the exact cause, but initial reports suggest it was a preventable incident due to poor maintenance.
This event highlights the importance of regular cleaning and maintenance in commercial kitchens, especially in high-risk areas like ventilation systems. It also serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with grease buildup in such environments.
