Guizhou Pingshui Machinery Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Aviation Industry First Group and in collaboration with the China Academy of Agricultural Mechanization Sciences, made significant progress in 2002 by engaging in a "production, study, and research" cooperative project. As a result, the company successfully developed and manufactured the 4MZ-5 type cotton picker, filling a critical gap in the domestic market and breaking the monopoly previously held by foreign products. The majority of the components—such as gearboxes, hydraulic pumps and motors, valves, and cylinders—are locally produced, achieving a localization rate exceeding 90%. This achievement positioned Guizhou Pingshui Machinery Co., Ltd. as the only domestic company and the third in the world capable of producing large-scale self-propelled cotton pickers.
The 4MZ-5 model is a large, five-row horizontal picking self-propelled cotton picker featuring a front-mounted picking workbench, an automatic reversing transfer cotton box, and a hybrid drive system combining hydraulic and mechanical technologies. It is powered by an engine with 186 kW of power. After undergoing comprehensive testing and real-world application by the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, the machine demonstrated impressive performance: a picking efficiency of 95.03%, an operating speed of 5.77 km/h, fuel consumption of 1.7 kg per hour, and an impurity content of less than 10%.
With an expected annual production capacity of 100 units in 2006, the 4MZ-5 cotton picker was recognized as part of the "National Key New Product Plan Project," highlighting its importance in advancing agricultural mechanization in China. This development not only marked a milestone for the company but also showcased China's growing capabilities in high-tech agricultural machinery.
