Working fire in Chicago, 4-17-14

Last night, I had the chance to witness a rare and unusual fire call. There's a small area that belongs to Chicago, located along Foster Avenue west of River Road, right next to O'Hare Airport. Even though it's closer to Rosemont and Schiller Park, it falls under the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) jurisdiction. It's not really a good area for either the airport or Engine 11, making it kind of a "no-man's land" in terms of response coverage. When smoke was reported in the area, multiple departments responded â€” Rosemont, Schiller Park, Des Plaines, and Park Ridge. The CFD was also notified. Upon arrival, the units found a large fire inside an industrial building that had been used for a tour or party bus. Park Ridge, which arrived on auto-aide, used a deck gun to tackle the main fire. Then, Chicago companies showed up and worked alongside all the suburban crews. One unique element of this incident was the use of the Mobile Ventilation Unit (MVU) 924. This unit is stationed at O'Hare and most of us fire enthusiasts rarely get to see it in action. I snapped a few photos of the street signs at both ends of the block â€” they were clearly suburban-style. Also, I overheard that the sprinkler connections on the building had Chicago threads, which was interesting. It was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime event. A real rarity in our area.
