On Wednesday, June 8, 2016, just after midnight, Schaumburg fire companies were dispatched to the SB IL Route 53 local lanes, just past I-90, in response to a fire involving a semi-trailer. Upon arrival, crews discovered a fully loaded 40-foot trailer containing commercial uniforms that was engulfed in flames. Battalion 5 requested a tanker from Long Grove and Elk Grove Township to supply Engine 52 with two attack lines. Schaumburg Engines 51 and 54, along with Squad 55, were on scene and had already used their tank water.
Rolling Meadows Engine 16 and Hoffman Estates Engine 21 also arrived to assist with manpower during the nearly two-hour operation to remove the smoldering contents of the truck. Additional resources included Schaumburg Trucks 52 and 53, as well as ambulances 53 and 54. The incident involved multiple departments working together to contain and extinguish the fire, highlighting the importance of inter-agency cooperation during large-scale emergencies.
Several photos from the scene were taken by Larry Shapiro, capturing the efforts of firefighters as they worked through the night. These images include a Long Grove fire department tender supplying water, Schaumburg FD Truck 53, firefighters using a saw on the trailer, and a dramatic shot of sparks flying as a firefighter works late into the night. Other photos show the aftermath, with emergency personnel removing the damaged cargo and preparing for the next steps.
