Taiwan scholars developed the world's first full-color LED: is expected to surpass OLED

The latest issue of the optoelectronics industry magazine "Compound Semiconductor" (Compound Semiconductor) introduced the world's first single-crystal full-color light-emitting diodes, and the invention as a cover story of the publication, a detailed description of this technology for the next generation of lighting And the possible significant impact of the display, or even called "a game-changer for next-generation lighting", the inventor is two academics from Taiwan, China.

Since more than 20 years ago Japanese scientist Nakamura Shuji (2014 Nobel Laureate in physics, now a professor at the University of California) invented high brightness blue and green light-emitting diodes (LEDs), LEDs have been widely used in day-to-day lighting, cell phones and TVs Backlight, car and medical equipment. However, only monochromatic LEDs are currently on the market. Only three monochromatic LEDs can be used together to form a full-color LED or a blue-doped LED in a full-color or white application requiring the use of blue, green and red (three primary colors) Add yellow phosphor to achieve similar white effect. These methods are disadvantageous in that they are difficult to manufacture, high in price, waste electricity or poor in efficiency, and in the future, mobile phones and TVs are increasingly demanding in terms of power saving and resolution, and have encountered bottlenecks in the traditional way.

This long-standing problem plaguing the industry has been solved by Chinese scientists. Southern California Ostendo Tech Inc. Owned epitaxial laboratory (Ostendo Epi Lab.) Developed the world's first full-color LED. Using gallium nitride materials, they developed three special quantum structures that emit light of three different colors and emit independently or in combination. Due to the power-saving and long-life LEDs, full LED displays made of full-color LEDs will likely replace liquid crystal technologies (LCDs) used today and beyond organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs).

Dr. Chen Zhijia, the program's host, said that making blue or green LEDs from gallium nitride materials is a mature technology, but making red LEDs is very difficult. Not only are they the few teams in the world that can achieve this goal, And is the only able to focus the three primary colors on a small device, and can freely access any color, if coupled with the appropriate deployment of the circuit, you can mix a myriad of colors of light, the picture quality will be more beautiful.

The two inventors are Chen Zhijia and Ye Yachuan from Taiwan. Chen Zhijia graduated from Electronic Physics Department of National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan with a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from State University of New York. He was an associate professor of electrical engineering at the University of Maryland and currently serves as head of Ostendo's Epitach Laboratory. Ye graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering at National Taiwan University and obtained a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Los Angeles. He was previously a Tecstar and a NASA-JPL research scientist at NASA and is currently the chief scientist of the company.
