Highland Park firefighters responded to a fire reported in the insulation between the second floor and the attic of a large, unoccupied two-story home at 24245 St. Johns Avenue this afternoon. The property was undergoing renovation at the time of the incident. Upon arrival, the first responding units encountered heavy smoke and quickly upgraded the alarm to Code 4, indicating a working fire. Firefighters launched an aggressive attack, successfully containing the flames to the area of origin.
Mutual aid support included Highwood Truck 37, Lake Forest Engine 412, Deerfield-Bannockburn Truck 20, and Northfields Truck 29. On scene, Highland Park Fire Department deployed both ambulances, all three engines, as well as the chief and battalion chief. Crews worked swiftly to control the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.
Photos from the scene, captured by Larry Shapiro, show the extent of the damage and the efforts of the responding units. Additional images include a Seagrave fire engine, a Pierce engine connected to a hydrant, a Highland Park Battalion Chief, and firefighters using a large diameter hose during the operation.
