Box Alarm in Des Plaines, 2-14-21

A fire broke out at Hugo’s Frog Bar inside the Rivers Casino shortly after 10 p.m., originating from the cooking ventilation system and rooftop exhaust fans. According to reports from DailyHerald.com, the blaze was caused by accumulated grease igniting in the hood and duct system. The Des Plaines Fire Department quickly brought the fire under control and fully extinguished it just after 11 p.m. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The damage was limited to the kitchen hood, ductwork, and part of the roof, with only minor water damage in other areas. One of the evacuated guests sought medical attention but was treated for a non-life-threatening condition and taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. While the casino reopened early Monday, Hugo’s Frog Bar remained closed for further inspection and cleanup. Under current Illinois state guidelines for operating during the pandemic, casinos are allowed to remain open 24/7, but must limit their capacity to 50% of total occupancy. This rule applies to Rivers Casino, which continues to operate with reduced numbers of guests. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of regular maintenance in commercial kitchens, where grease buildup can pose serious fire hazards. Local officials are likely to review safety protocols following this event. Below is an image gallery featuring photos from the scene, captured by Larry Shapiro:
